I was recently made redundant just shy of reaching seven years with the company. The company offered me career counselling to secure another job, which I dismissed initially because I thought ‘enhancing’ my resume would not off-set my age. I gained two face to face and one zoom interviews with prospective new employers. Despite my extensive experience and proven track record, in each case younger applicants were chosen ahead of me. I had the experience and track record to easily be the best fit for all of the jobs I applied for. My resume read well seven years ago but was now failing to make me to stand out. I swallowed my pride and accepted the career coaching offer with no confidence of the value. I was most fortunate to work with Melita Long, the principal of Careers on Purpose. She patiently listened and took the time to understand my value. Her level of professionalism and empathy is unmatched, far exceeding any expectations. It wasn’t just another 8 hour ‘job’ for her and the time we spent together over multiple sessions far exceeded what she was paid for. Melita in a relatively short time together knew me better than most – carefully listening and coaxing out my story. She has extensive experience helping people of all ages gain employment in many diverse vocations. Importantly she completely understands how to make a resume stand out, without embellishment, with a masterful knowledge of language structure; even to the extent limiting the number and carefully selecting words for maximum impact. Her language craft could be described as exquisite, eloquent and compelling. No doubt she would do a much better job of this recommendation. With Melita’s help, armed with a completely refreshed resume with tangible metrics, I secured full time employment with my (first) next job application, with an employer we targeted as preferred. This would not have happened without Melita. I would thoroughly recommend Melita to anyone looking to advance or transition in their career.

Common questions

Career coaching, clearly explained.

Short answers to the questions clients commonly ask before getting started.

Career coaching helps you manage your career with more clarity and direction. It may cover career or business planning, job hunting, personal branding, career progression, leadership, resumes, LinkedIn and interview preparation.

No. Careers on Purpose is not a recruitment service. You are the client, and the focus is on giving you the strategy, skills and support to secure your own role.

Career coaching may improve clarity, confidence, planning, career opportunities and resilience. The supplied research notes average coaching ROI of 3.4×–7.9×, with Careers on Purpose reporting 5×–10×.

Yes. Sessions remain confidential whether you pay personally or your organisation funds the coaching. The exception is where there is a declared intention to harm yourself or others.

Yes. Support may include job-search planning, networking, personal branding, resume and LinkedIn improvement, cover letters, key selection criteria and interview preparation.

If you have them, bring your current resume or CV, LinkedIn profile and ideas about roles or career directions. If not, broad goals are enough to get started.

Usually not. Existing experience and qualifications may often be repositioned or built on. The supplied material notes only around 10–15% of career-change clients need to return to full-time study and start again.

AI may generate options, but a career coach adds human judgement, empathy, hiring-market insight, accountability and support with complex decisions, confidence, workplace dynamics and salary negotiations.
