What is career coaching and how can it help me?

Career coaching is a professional service designed to help people manage all aspects of their career. This includes identifying and planning a new career or business, setting and achieving career goals, help with all aspects of job hunting, resume writing, personal branding, career management and progression and leadership development and executive coaching. A Career Coach (or Career Development Practitioner) can help you: Clarify your values, motivations, strengths, skills, career needs and goals. Explore a new career or business direction and how to achieve it. Create a career/business/job hunting/career progression action plan. Improve your resume, LinkedIn, cover letter, and key selection criteria responses. Identify your achievements, increase your confidence and help prepare you for interviews and career presentations. Develop your personal brand and promote your unique points of difference. Pass probation, performance reviews and navigate workplace challenges. Career coaching is not… Recruitment - we do not place people in jobs, we don't work for hiring managers, and we don't get a commission when you get a new job (it would be nice if we did). Therapy - whilst we often touch on some sensitive topics, such as redundancy, workplace bullying or bad managers, career coaching is not therapy, although some coaches come from that background. Legal advice - Whilst we do our best to keep up to date with the latest employment laws, and can recommend when you need more support, we are not employment lawyers and will refer people who need them.
Will a career coach help me write or improve my resume or LinkedIn profile?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons people initially seek out a career coach. One of the key benefits of working with a career coach is improving your resume and LinkedIn profile, also referred to as your career collateral. Anyone can write their own resume and LinkedIn, but a professional can take it to another level. There are several different ways that career coaches write resumes. Some will interview you briefly and take notes and write your resume without you, others will ask you to merely enter your notes into a system and reformat your resume. At Careers on Purpose, we do things differently. We write your resume WITH you and spend time with you to identify, articulate and quantify your achievements that come from your strengths and skills that you take for granted. Quantifying your achievements is the gold that enables you to stand out to employers, demonstrate your value and enable you to earn increased income.
How does career coaching work, is it in person or online?

Our career coaching services can be delivered in person in Melbourne or online. Because we work with clients based all over Australia and the world, most of our clients find it easier to work with us online. You can book coaching sessions with us using Calendly which is integrated with Zoom as our primary meeting platform. If required, we also offer coaching sessions via Teams, WhatsApp, Messenger or phone if that is easier for you. Most of our career programs are based on a multi-session approach, designed to deliver maximum value, with practical online tools and sessions to deliver results. Whilst some career coaches/counsellors only deliver either career counselling or job-hunting services, Careers on Purpose delivers a full range of end-to-end career coaching services. We can support you with all aspects from career identification and planning, through to job-hunting, resume writing, interview coaching and career progression with the one coach.
How long does it take to see results from career coaching?

Career coaching is a very individual process and whilst most coaches have created programs to suit different needs, the number of coaching sessions required and the length of time to see results varies. Whilst clients typically gain insights and help from the first session, I caution against choosing programs that promise career results within only one session, especially when identifying and changing your career. I have worked in one of those models and from experience know that for most people it is not that simple, as there are so many factors and influences involved. That said, I’ve seen many clients reporting some results and ‘aha moments’ within the first session, including increasing their: Understanding of their values, strengths, motivations, personality and transferable skills. Clarity around possible career opportunities. Knowledge of how to improve their career collateral – resume, LinkedIn, cover letters, personal branding and job-hunting approaches. Awareness that they have more achievements and can deliver more value than they realised. Most of the time what people gain in one session is just scratching the surface and multiple sessions are required to gain meaningful value. For this reason, at Careers on Purpose we offer an initial free career consultation (session) and assessment valued at $279 to assess where you are at now, understand your career needs, what services you would benefit from? We also offer this initial free consultation to see if we are a fit and explain how our programs work. Whether you choose to work with us or not, you will walk away with valuable career feedback.
Is career coaching tax deductible in Australia?

Short answer, yes, typically most of our clients are able to claim career coaching services under their tax. Officially in Australia, career coaching expenses may be tax deductible when they meet certain conditions, primarily when they qualify as self-education, professional development, or training related to your current employment. This includes professional development coaching and executive coaching, which are the two main forms of career coaching services that we provide at Careers on Purpose. Careers on Purpose, with a background in Corporate Marketing, is also able to provide Small Business Coaching and Marketing services for clients that are self-employed.
